| Addiction is a chronic illness, and usually is symptomatic of an underlying biochemical imbalance in the brain which gets thrown into trouble when a dose of life’s inevitable stress comes around. Treating addiction requires helping patients to build lasting and caring relationships around a team of professionals dedicated to understanding their complicated illness. I have committed to the study of this disease for over two decades. I did so out of necessity when an addicted patient committed suicide before he could be treated. Two decades ago addiction was poorly understood and those of us who did attempt to treat this disease had very few tools and limited understanding. We now have convincing data that defines this disease as based in brain chemistry and treated with a combined attack of behavioral therapies, pharmacology, and understanding, not judgment. Dr. Kipper is currently hosting “Recovery Advocates”, a weekly interactive radio program about addiction on KABC in Los Angeles. |
